Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) has appointed Gazi Maulana Ataur Rahman as its new secretary general, while long-serving Secretary General Yunus Ahmad has been made a member of the party’s Presidium.

The decision was taken at a special session of the party’s Majlis-e-Shura held on Saturday at FARS Hotel and Resorts in Bijoynagar of Dhaka. The party also dissolved its existing central committee before the expiry of its tenure and introduced changes to its top leadership.

The party’s central media coordinator, KM Shariatullah, confirmed the development.

He said the current central committee was due to complete its tenure in December, but a post-election review following the national parliamentary polls identified several organisational weaknesses, including shortcomings in candidate selection and inactivity among grassroots workers. In light of those findings, the party reshuffled its leadership ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

Before his appointment, Gazi Ataur Rahman served as the party’s central joint secretary general and spokesperson. Yunus Ahmad had served as Islami Andolan Bangladesh secretary general continuously since 2008.
