Three members of a Bangladeshi family were stabbed to death in a brutal attack at their residence in Rome, Italy, with relatives alleging that the victims had received death threats months before the killings.
The victims were identified as Kamal Hossain (also known as Kamal Uddin Babul), 39, his wife Momtaz Begum, 35, and their five-year-old daughter Arisha. They were originally from Char Kakra village under Companiganj upazila in Noakhali.
The attack took place around 9pm local time on Friday at the family’s apartment on Via Montiglio in the Aurelio neighbourhood of Rome.
Italian media reported that unidentified assailants entered the apartment and attacked the family members with sharp weapons. Three victims died at the scene, while their eldest son Ayon, 20, survived the attack with injuries and was taken to Gemelli Polyclinic. He is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Rome police and forensic teams rushed to the scene after the incident and launched an investigation. Authorities are examining CCTV footage, digital evidence and other information to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the killings.
Local news agencies, including ANSA and AGI, reported that the victims were of Bangladeshi origin and had no known criminal record. Investigators are considering several possibilities, including personal disputes and robbery, while no suspect has been identified so far.
Meanwhile, relatives in Noakhali have alleged that the killings may have been premeditated. They claimed that the family had received anonymous death threats around seven months ago when they visited Bangladesh during a vacation.
Kamal’s father Mohammad Siraj alleged that the matter had been reported to local authorities and police but no effective action was taken.
The family believes the attack could be linked to a previous dispute involving members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community in Rome, though the allegation has not been verified by investigators.
Kamal had been living in Italy for around 15 years and brought his wife and children there about two years ago. He was the family’s main earning member, relatives said.
The killings have left Kamal’s elderly parents and five sisters devastated. Relatives and local residents have urged the Bangladesh government to take steps to bring back the bodies and ensure a proper investigation in coordination with Italian authorities.
The bodies are currently being kept at a hospital morgue in Rome as the investigation continues.
