Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Friday alleged that the government has failed to maintain law and order, claiming that rising incidents of rape, murder and other crimes have left people frustrated with its performance.
He made the remarks while addressing the opening session of the party’s Central Majlish-e-Shura meeting at Al-Falah Auditorium in the capital.
Criticising the home minister, Shafiqur said the minister appeared to be preoccupied with issues beyond his own ministry while the country’s law and order situation continued to deteriorate.
“Our home minister seems to keep track of every ministry except his own. Meanwhile, the law and order situation is worsening day by day,” he said.
The Jamaat chief said Bangladesh had achieved independence through immense sacrifice, first in 1947 and later in 1971, but alleged that successive governments had failed to meet the people’s expectations.
“Those entrusted with governing the country destroyed the people’s aspirations. Today, there is no security for people’s lives and property, and such incidents are occurring regularly,” he said.
Referring to the country’s reform process, Shafiqur said people had hoped for meaningful change following the sacrifices that led to the recent political transition.
He said a referendum on reforms had been held in which, according to him, people had effectively expressed two mandates, but only one had been acknowledged.
“The people wanted to change the system of governance that had turned previous rulers authoritarian, but that aspiration has not been fulfilled,” he said.
Shafiqur also said Jamaat-e-Islami would continue to oppose all forms of fascism, regardless of who was in power.
“Fascism is neither old nor new. We will remain vocal against every form of fascism,” he said, urging the public to remain vigilant against authoritarianism.
