Bangladesh Bank has promoted Md Sakhawat Hossain to executive director for research, elevating a career central banker with more than three decades of experience in economic research, policy analysis and monetary policy work.
The promotion took effect on 17 June 2026, the central bank said.
Before his elevation, Hossain served as director of the Research Department. He also worked as a faculty member at the Bangladesh Bank Training Academy from June 2019 to February 2024.
Hossain joined Bangladesh Bank as an assistant director in 1994 and has since spent a 32-year career across the Research Department, Policy Analysis Unit and Chief Economist’s Unit, contributing to research-based policy work within the central bank.
An economist by training, he completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from Jahangirnagar University. He later earned a PhD in economics with a dissertation on import-export demand functions and balance of payments stability in Bangladesh.
He has published multiple research papers on macroeconomic and policy issues in national and international journals.
For official and professional purposes, he has visited Singapore, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
He was born into a Muslim family in Silimpur village under Kalihati upazila in Tangail district. His father was Ahsan Ullah, and his mother Suriya Begum.
In his personal life, he is married to Hosne Ara Mostafa, a former executive manager at BASIC Bank Limited who retired voluntarily in 2022. The couple has two sons and one daughter.
