Four Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested in India’s Gurgaon in connection with a robbery at the residence of a retired army officer.
According to NDTV, police said the suspects attempted to evade arrest by jumping into an underpass during a chase. In the incident, some of them suffered fractures, including injuries to hands and legs.
NDTV also reported that the accused have been identified as Hilal, Mamo Khan, Mohammad Khairul alias Arman and Mohammad Maman. Police from the Palam Vihar crime branch arrested them near the Bajghera underpass on Dwarka Road.
The robbery took place at a retired army colonel’s house in Sector-23, an upscale area of Gurgaon, four days earlier. The incident occurred in the early hours of 4 June when the accused allegedly broke into the house by cutting through a rear window grill.
They allegedly held the colonel’s daughter-in-law and granddaughter hostage and looted gold and diamond jewellery, cash and other valuables. Police said the robbers also threatened the family before fleeing the scene.
Following a complaint, Palam Vihar police registered a case and launched an investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of the suspects. A senior police officer said the accused are linked to more than two dozen cases across different Indian states.
Preliminary investigations suggest they entered India from Bangladesh to carry out crimes and returned after each incident to avoid arrest.
Police records show Hilal faces 12 cases in Delhi, including theft, robbery, dacoity and Arms Act charges. Mamo Khan has one theft case in Delhi. Khairul alias Arman faces eight cases across Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, including theft, robbery, dacoity, murder and gangster-related offences. Maman faces three similar cases in Gurgaon and Delhi.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Naveen Sharma said the group used to survey high-value houses before targeting them for robbery.
“They are Bangladesh residents. They came to India to commit crimes and returned after each operation. They had planned to flee to Bangladesh after this robbery as well, but police arrested them before that,” he said.
Police said further interrogation is underway to determine their involvement in other crimes and possible links to similar incidents.
