Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has thwarted an attempt by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to push 20 people across the riverine frontier near the Sundarbans.
The incident occurred in the Nil Dumur area under the jurisdiction of the BGB 17 Battalion.
According to BGB, between 8 June and the early hours of 10 June, BSF’s 74 and 77 battalions gathered 18–20 men, women and children and tried to push them across at several points along the river border.
The Nil Dumur BGB 17 Battalion headquarters confirmed that the attempts were foiled by BGB vigilance.
To prevent such push‑ins, the battalion has taken multiple measures — deploying extra personnel at border outposts, conducting intensified night patrols with motorcycles and ATVs, raising awareness through loudspeaker announcements, and using whistles, lights and megaphones during special patrols.
High‑speed boats are also patrolling river routes, while awareness meetings with locals are being organised. A two‑section quick response force remains on standby at battalion headquarters.
Lt Col Shahariar Rajib, commanding officer of the BGB 17 Battalion, said no individual or group will be allowed to enter Bangladesh illegally.
He added that push‑in attempts are being strictly resisted, with round‑the‑clock patrols along the river and border areas.
Loudspeaker and whistle alerts are being used to signal BSF that BGB is on high alert, he said adding that the battalion remains vigilant in safeguarding the frontier.
