A mobile court in Chuadanga seized 280 kilogrammes of government-subsidised rice and flour under the Open Market Sale (OMS) programme and fined a dealer Tk50,000 on Wednesday.
The drive took place in the Jhenaidah Bus Stand area of the municipal town in the afternoon following a tip-off, officials said.
The mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate Alauddin Al Azad, recovered seven sacks of OMS rice weighing 210kg and two sacks of flour weighing 70kg from a van during the operation.
According to district administration sources, the seized commodities belonged to OMS dealer Sohel Malek Sujan, organising secretary of the Chuadanga municipality unit of BNP and dealer for Ward No. 7 of the municipality.
Officials alleged that Sujan was attempting to move the OMS food items to an unauthorised location instead of transporting them to the designated distribution point when authorities intercepted the vehicle.
The mobile court fined him Tk50,000 under Section 45 of the Consumers’ Right Protection Act, 2009.
