Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Ghazi Nazrul Islam has demanded further modernisation of Mongla Seaport to accelerate economic development in the country’s south-western region.
The MP raised the demand on Wednesday during the National Parliament session, addressing Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam.
“If Mongla Seaport is developed into a modern and time-appropriate facility, widespread industrialisation and commercial activities will expand in the southern region,” Ghazi Nazrul Islam said.
Noting that comparatively greater importance is currently being given to Chittagong Port, he called on the government to take more effective initiatives to enhance Mongla Port’s capacity.
In response, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said modernising Mongla Port is the need of the hour, and various activities are already underway.
“Several projects, including infrastructure development at the port with Chinese funding, are being implemented. Once completed, the port’s capacity will further increase,” he said.
The minister also noted that alongside Mongla Port, initiatives must be taken to modernise Nawapara Port to make the country’s maritime and waterway trade more dynamic.
Sheikh Rabiul Alam informed the House that approximately Tk110 crore in revenue has been collected from Mongla Seaport during the current fiscal year.
“This indicates the port’s growing activities and economic importance,” he said.
