Two students of BRAC University drowned while taking bath in a pond in Pashchim Deobhog area of Munshiganj city on Friday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Md Sopan, 24, son of the late Mostakur Rahman and a resident of the West Deobhog area, and Md Ajwad, 23, son of Ripon from the Mirpur-13 area of Dhaka.
Both were second-year undergraduate students at BRAC University.
According to police and local sources, a group of 13 to 15 university students from Dhaka and other area had visited at Sopan’s residence earlier in the day.
Around 4:30 pm, several members of the group went to a nearby pond to take a bath.
During the bath, Ajwad slipped and fell into deep water. As he did not know how to swim, he began to drown, prompting Sopan to attempt a rescue. However, both students eventually went missing underwater.
Friends and locals later rescued them and rushed them to Munshiganj Sadar General Hospital, where the attending physician declared them dead.
Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, stated that a diving team was dispatched to the scene upon receiving the news.
However, they learned while en route that locals had already rescued the victims and taken them to the hospital.
Fire service personnel subsequently visited the hospital to gather further information.
Md Kamrul Hasan, additional superintendent of police, confirmed the incident, noting that the students died while visiting a friend’s home and that the matter is currently under investigation.
Md Mominul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said inquest reports have been prepared and an unnatural death (UD) case is being processed.
He added that post-mortem examinations will be conducted if the families request it, otherwise the bodies will be handed over after legal formalities.
