Detective Branch (DB) Cyber and Special Crime (North) Division arrested two members of an organised fraud ring promising lucrative postings and promotions to government officials.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations NM Nasiruddin confirmed the matter in a press release on Friday.
The arrestees have been identified as M Aminur Rahman Shanto, 44, and Nilufa Sultana, 56.
According to the press release, Home Minister’s Assistant Private Secretary Kamrul Hasan filed a written complaint with the DMP Commissioner on 20 May. DMP then directed the DB to investigate the matter and take necessary legal action.
The complaint said an individual had been contacting ministry officials via WhatsApp, claiming to represent various ministries and offering to facilitate transfers and promotions. The person was also seeking illegal financial gain for the placement of high-level officials.
Moreover, he claimed through WhatsApp messages to have the capacity to influence any activity under the ministry’s jurisdiction.
DB conducted a raid at a residence in West Rampura around 9:35pm. The ringleader, Shanto, was arrested, and the mobile phone and SIM card used for the fraudulent activities were seized.
Shanto then admitted his involvement and, Nilufa, a personal officer at the Ministry of Home Affairs, was also arrested. A regular case has been registered against them at Ramna Police Station.
Operations are underway to arrest other members involved in the ring.
