Chelsea have confirmed Xabi Alonso as their new head coach after making one of the biggest moves of the summer.
On Sunday, the Premier League club announced the Spaniard’s appointment after a poor season that left Chelsea far below expectations.
Alonso takes charge after Liam Rosenior’s exit and becomes the latest manager trusted with leading Chelsea back to the top.
The former Liverpool midfielder arrives in London with high expectations after his outstanding work at Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso made history in Germany by leading Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in the 2023 24 season. His side also completed the campaign unbeaten, earning praise across Europe.
His return to Real Madrid did not last long, but Chelsea have now placed their faith in the 44 year old to begin a new era at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso’s knowledge of English football also adds to his appeal. During his playing days, he became a fan favorite at Liverpool and won major trophies.
Chelsea ended the season in ninth place and are likely to miss European competition. That disappointing finish pushed the club to make another major change.
Alonso is now Chelsea’s fifth permanent manager since BlueCo took over in 2022.
Chelsea hope Alonso can bring stability, clear direction and winning football back to the club as they try to rebuild after another frustrating campaign.
