Indian Border Security Force (BSF) handed over 20 Bangladeshi nationals to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) after detaining them for illegal entry into India.
The handovers took place at the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh and the Nalitabari border in Sherpur on Saturday.
In Mymensingh, 10 detainees were handed over at the 1120 main pillar area of Dhopajhuri border in Haluaghat upazila during a flag meeting between BGB and BSF around 6am on Saturday.
India’s 22 BSF Battalion from Jatrakona camp transferred them to Telikhali BGB camp. The men, all residents of Godagari upazila in Rajshahi, had crossed into Meghalaya illegally on Thursday without passports or valid documents. Meghalaya police detained them and later returned them through BSF.
Md Mizanur Rahman, Naib Subedar of Telikhali BOP under the 39 BGB Battalion, confirmed the development.
Several cases have been filed under Section 11(1)(a) of the Bangladesh Passport Order, 1973. Police said the detainees were produced before court after completion of legal procedures.
Haluaghat Police Station’s Officer‑in‑charge Mohammad Ferdous Alam said the detainees were sent to court after completion of legal procedures.
In Sherpur, another 10 Bangladeshis were handed over through the Nalitabari border on Saturday afternoon, said Md Ful Mia, camp commander of Hatipagar BOP under BGB 39 battalion.
The process took place at the 1116 main pillar area of Nakugaon ICP in Noyabil Union, Nalitabari upazila, in the presence of BGB and BSF officials.
BGB said the men had entered India illegally about a year ago and were detained by Meghalaya police two days earlier while moving suspiciously.
Police filed cases against them at Nalitabari Police Station under the Passport Act, and the detainees were sent to jail through Sherpur court.
Officials said many of those handed over had been working as laborers in India after crossing the border illegally at different times.
Nalitabari Police Station’s Officer‑in‑charge Md Ashrafuzzaman said the detainees were sent to jail through court in the afternoon after BGB filed cases.
