Shahbagh police arrested seven individuals for drug consumption and peddling at Suhrawardy Udyan on Wednesday night using an innovative undercover tactic involving a musical performance.
In a special anti-drug operation conducted at approximately 9:00 PM, a team from Shahbagh Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) donned plain clothes to blend in with the public.
To lure suspects, the officers adopted the unique strategy of staging a musical gathering.
Unaware of the police presence, the suspects gathered at the scene, where they were apprehended red-handed in possession of cannabis (ganja).
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Mamunur Rahman, 24; Md Rana, 19; Sajib Adhikari; Md Shahidul Islam, 42; Md Rakib Hossain, 19; Md Al Amin, 19; and Md Masum Bhuiyan, 24.
Following their arrest, the suspects were produced before the Special Metropolitan Magistrate of the Ramna Division. The court subsequently sentenced them to rigorous imprisonment for various terms.
NM Nasiruddin, deputy commissioner (media and public relations) of the DMP, said such creative and stringent operations by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police will continue in their efforts to eradicate drugs.
