England could become the biggest international side to tour Nepal after the ECB began exploring plans for a short T20I series during the 2027-31 Future Tours Programme cycle.
Nepal has never hosted a full tour from a Test-playing nation. That could change within the next few years as the ECB examines ways to fit a brief white-ball trip into England’s crowded schedule.
ESPNcricinfo understands former Nepal captain Paras Khadka, now secretary of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), met ECB officials in India after England’s tense win over Nepal at the T20 World Cup in February.
England edged that match off the final ball at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Nepal’s supporters created one of the loudest atmospheres of the tournament and drew praise across the cricket world.
The ECB currently continues discussions around the 2027-31 FTP cycle while waiting for the ICC to confirm the structure of the next World Test Championship. Officials still need clarity on whether the ICC will keep the minimum two-match requirement in Test series.
England could place a two or three-match T20I series in Nepal immediately before another white-ball assignment in Asia. India remains one possible option. The ECB wants to avoid overloading the calendar, but a short stop in Nepal would add only a few days to the schedule.
Ireland has already moved closer to Nepal cricket. In March, Cricket Ireland announced a five-year strategic partnership agreement with CAN and confirmed plans for a white-ball tour during the 2026-27 winter.
Nepal captain Rohit Paudel said a major nation visiting Kathmandu would boost the country’s standing in world cricket.
“It would mean a lot, especially if Australia or England comes to Nepal,” Paudel said during the T20 World Cup. “That would show world cricket Nepal also plays cricket, and plays decent cricket.”
Paras Khadka also pushed for stronger opposition in a recent Sky Sports documentary.
“What Nepal cricket needs right now is exposure,” Khadka said. “The only way you improve as a cricketer is when you play against better opponents.”
England’s 2027 home summer already includes an Ashes series against Australia, with Pakistan and New Zealand also expected to tour for white-ball cricket.
