Mamata Banerjee has updated her X bio to reflect three previous terms as chief minister, in an apparent concession of defeat days after she had defiantly refused to resign following the BJP’s landslide victory in West Bengal.
Trinamool Congress chief’s bio now reads, “Founder Chairperson All India Trinamool Congress. Chief Minister of West Bengal (15th, 16th and 17th Vidhan Sabha).”
The change came as Suvendu Adhikari – who defeated Mamata from Bhabanipur – took oath on Saturday as the BJP’s first chief minister of Bengal.
Mamata, whose TMC won only 80 of 294 seats, had alleged the verdict was “not a people’s mandate but a conspiracy”. “Why should I step down? We have not lost. The mandate has been looted,” she told reporters.
BJP, which ended Mamata’s 15-year rule with 207 seats, called her stance “anarchic” and against democratic traditions.
