Police in Noakhali’s Subarnachar upazila arrested madrasa teacher Abul Khayer, 35, on Thursday over allegations of molesting a female student.
He was arrested from Maijdee town in Noakhali on Thursday afternoon.
Abul Khayer is a resident of the Middle Bagya area under Ward No 5 of Charjubilee union in Subarnachar upazila. The victim is a student of the Hifz department at Charbagya Darul Arkam Islamiya Madrasa.
According to the case statement, the victim’s father Mohammad Rahim filed allegations of molestation against the teacher.
On 16 April, the student gave a statement under Section 22 before the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. Based on her statement, the court instructed police to register a case. Later, the victim’s house was allegedly attacked and vandalised over the filing of the case.
After video footage of the attack spread on social media, the victim’s mother filed another case with Subarnachar Police Station. The 5-minute and 22-second video showed a group of people armed with sticks attacking the victim’s house.
The attackers also threatened the family and demanded withdrawal of the case, according to the complaint.
Charjabbar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Lutfur Rahman said police arrested the main accused, madrasa teacher Abul Khayer, based on secret information.
He said the accused was later produced before the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court after necessary legal procedures.
