Bus services on the Meherpur-Chuadanga inter-district route have been suspended on Monday in protest against the physical assault of a bus driver and a transport worker.
Meherpur Motor Workers’ Union President Ahsan Habib Sona confirmed the matter. Since morning, no buses have departed from Meherpur to Chuadanga. Despite a meeting with the administration, no resolution was reached, and transport leaders said the strike was officially called following a meeting with workers.
According to Ahsan, a bus named Golden Travels left Meherpur for Chuadanga on Sunday afternoon. When the vehicle reached the Amjhupi area, a dispute arose with a motorcyclist over overtaking. During the altercation, the motorcyclist, identified as Rabbi, assaulted the bus driver, Sohel Rana, and the supervisor.
Ahsan added that the programme was initiated because the security of the workers has been compromised. He said, “The blockade will continue until action is taken against the accused.”
Meherpur Motor Workers’ Union General Secretary Motiar Rahman noted that they are seeking a fair resolution through discussions with the administration. He warned, “If a solution is not reached, bus services on all inter-district routes in the district will be suspended. If the issue remains unresolved, workers have decided to shut down all long-distance transport if necessary.”
