A court in Dhaka on Tuesday granted bail to singer Mainul Ahsan Noble in a case filed against him on charges of raping a college student after abducting her in seven months ago.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub granted the bail on a Tk 1,000 bond after a hearing on the matter.

Defense counsel Md Monir Uddin said Noble filed a bail petition on Sunday and the court had set June 24 for holding the hearing on the matter.

He said the court heard the matter in the presence of the victim, whom Noble married on June 19 at the main gate of Keraniganj Central Jail under the supervision of the prison authorities.

Singer Noble, the plaintiff woman, and four witnesses, two from each side, were present at the time.

During the hearing, the victim said that she has no objection to Noble’s release on bail.

Earlier on June 18, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter ordered the prison authorities to arrange the marriage with their consent and inform the court.

A video of the woman, a former student of Eden Mohila College, being assaulted went viral. Parents of the girl recognised their daughter from the video and called the national emergency service 999.

Later, the victim woman was rescued from Noble’s residence and she filed a case against Noble on May 19 with Demra Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Police arrested Mainul Ahsan Noble from his Demra residence on May 20.
