National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen has claimed that BNP government no longer intends to implement reforms.
Speaking at a national convention on Sunday, he said following the referendum, BNP’s agreement or disagreement on specific issues is no longer the primary concern, as the people have already delivered their verdict.
Akhter remarked that seeking excuses to avoid the referendum’s outcome constitutes a rejection of the public mandate.
The convention, which focused on “Energy, Economy, Reform, and Referendum,” was organised by the Reform Implementation Committee of NCP at Diploma Engineers Institute in Kakrail.
Political scientist Dilara Choudhury, also speaking at the event, described BNP’s victory with a two-thirds majority as a “meticulous design”.
She emphasised that the party must be forced to implement the “July Mandate” (July Charter), warning that failure to do so would lead the country back towards a fascist regime.
During the first session of the convention, sociologist Mirza Hassan warned that the government is moving rapidly towards “bad governance.”
He argued that the prime minister must not be allowed to become “autocratic” and that his powers must be strictly curtailed – or “hands and feet tied” – to prevent such an outcome.
According to Akhter, this can only be achieved through the implementation of the referendum decisions and the July Mandate.
