Monira Sharmin, joint convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) for the reserved women’s seat in parliament, has filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the Election Commission’s decision to cancel her candidacy.
The petition was filed with the relevant branch of the High Court on Thursday.
On 23 April, the Returning Officer cancelled her nomination papers, stating that according to the Representation of the People Order, 1972, Monira Sharmin is not eligible to contest the election because three years have not yet passed since her resignation from government employment.
Monira Sharmin appealed against the Returning Officer’s decision, but the appeal was also rejected.
According to the information in Monira Sharmin’s affidavit, she joined the state-owned Bangladesh Krishi Bank as an officer on 11 November 2023 and resigned in December 2025. As per that timeline, only four and a half months have elapsed since her resignation, while the law requires three years to have passed.
After her appeal was rejected by the Election Commission, she approached the High Court seeking to overturn the decision and regain her candidacy for the reserved women’s seat.
