Taylor Swift has filed new trademark applications in the US aimed at protecting her voice, image and likeness amid growing concerns over artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes.
The filings were submitted on Friday to the United States Patent and Trademark Office through her company TAS Rights Management, which is listed as the owner of the material.
They include two audio recordings featuring Swift’s voice and a promotional image of the singer performing on stage in a sequined outfit while holding a pink guitar.
In one audio clip, she promotes her upcoming album ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ and directs listeners to streaming platforms, while the second references the album’s release date and pre-save options.
The image submitted shows Swift in a performance pose that has become closely associated with her live shows.
The move comes amid increasing use of AI tools to generate realistic but fake audio and visuals of public figures, including fabricated endorsements, advertisements and manipulated images.
Trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who highlighted the filings, said they appear designed to provide additional legal protection beyond existing publicity rights laws. He noted that while copyright law has traditionally covered music recordings, AI now allows voices to be replicated without copying original material, creating new legal challenges.
He also suggested that registering a celebrity’s voice and signature visual style could strengthen efforts to challenge AI-generated content that imitates performers without consent.
The applications have not yet been approved and remain under review.
