A man was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Raozan municipality area of Chattogram while returning home from a family visit late Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Kausaruzzaman Bablu, 35, son of Abul Kalam Soudagar of the area. He worked as a daily wage labourer and was also involved in small-scale contracting work supplying sand and bricks.
The incident occurred around 3am in front of Abul Naeem Soudagar’s house, adjacent to Ward No. 9 of the municipality.
According to family and local sources, Bablu had visited his maternal grandfather’s house for an invitation on Friday night. On his way back home with his cousin, he was intercepted by a group of 8-10 armed men.
The attackers reportedly beat him before opening fire and fled the scene immediately afterwards.
Locals and relatives rescued Bablu and rushed him to a nearby hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment.
The victim’s father alleged that his son had previously spoken out against extortion and criminal activities in the area and had received threats. He claimed the killing was pre-planned.
He further said Bablu had provided some information about the attackers to his cousin before his death. However, the family has not disclosed any names, citing the ongoing investigation. A case is being prepared, he added.
Bablu leaves behind two daughters. His body is currently kept at the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Authorities said it will be handed over to the family after completion of the post-mortem examination.
Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sajedul Islam said the victim was brought to hospital in a critical condition and later died. He confirmed that no other injuries were reported in the incident.
Police are investigating possible motives, including political or other involvement. “After legal procedures and the autopsy, the body will be handed over to the family and further necessary action will be taken,” he said.
The family is preparing to file a case over the incident, sources said.
