Manchester City reignited their Premier League title challenge with a dominant second-half performance to secure a convincing victory over Chelsea.
With Arsenal slipping to a home defeat against Bournemouth a day earlier, the pressure was on City to capitalise. Anything less than a win would have allowed the league leaders to escape unpunished.
City’s first-half display offered little encouragement. Lacking creativity and cutting edge, Pep Guardiola’s side struggled to break down Chelsea and created few clear chances. It was the kind of subdued performance that has cost them points at times this season.
However, the match changed dramatically after the break. Guardiola’s half-time intervention had an immediate impact as City scored three goals in just 17 minutes to take full control.
Nico O’Reilly opened the scoring, meeting a pinpoint cross from Rayan Cherki with a well-timed header. The goal continued O’Reilly’s impressive run, with six goals in his last ten appearances across all competitions.
Moments later, Cherki was again at the heart of the action. After a short corner routine, he weaved past defenders before slipping a clever pass to Marc Guéhi, who turned sharply and finished clinically to double the lead. The assist took Cherki into double figures for the season, underlining his growing influence.
The result was sealed by Jérémy Doku, who capitalised on a midfield error from Moisés Caicedo, surged into the box and fired into the bottom corner.
The victory moves City to within six points of Arsenal, with a game in hand and a crucial meeting between the two sides at the Etihad Stadium next Sunday. Wins in both fixtures would see Guardiola’s team draw level on points with the leaders.
The emphatic nature of this result also significantly boosts City’s goal difference, now just three behind Arsenal’s.
For Chelsea, it was another setback in a difficult run of form under Liam Rosenior. They have now lost four of their last five league matches, with hopes of salvaging their season increasingly reliant on cup competitions and a late push for a top-five finish.
It also marks the first time since 2018, during Antonio Conte’s tenure, that Chelsea have suffered consecutive Premier League defeats by margins of three goals or more.
City remain in contention for multiple trophies, including the FA Cup, and appear to be peaking at a decisive stage of the campaign. While statistical models still rate them as outsiders in the title race, this performance sends a strong message to their rivals.
