The district of Munshiganj is witnessing a dramatic rise in measles cases, prompting health authorities to take swift action.
Laboratory tests have confirmed 11 cases of measles, and a further 47 individuals are suspected of being infected. The district is on high alert as the outbreak continues to spread.
Three patients are currently receiving treatment at Munshiganj General Hospital, while others are being treated at various upazila health complexes across the district.
Ahmed Kabir, the director of Munshiganj General Hospital, confirmed that a special ward has been established to handle measles patients, with five beds set aside for their care.
Kamrul Jamaddar, civil surgeon of Munshiganj, reassured the public that all necessary measures have been taken to manage the outbreak. He stated, “The district health department has taken maximum precautions to prevent the further spread of the infection.”
The increase in measles cases is linked to the highly contagious rubella virus, which can spread quickly through coughing and sneezing.
Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, bloodshot eyes, and a red rash that starts on the face and spreads throughout the body.
Despite the rise in cases, there has been no widespread awareness campaign yet from the health department. The public has expressed concern over the lack of preventive measures to curb the spread of measles in the community.
Measles can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, severe diarrhea, malnutrition, and brain inflammation.
Children who contract measles may also experience a significant reduction in vitamin A levels, which can cause blindness.
The health department has urged residents to ensure their children are vaccinated to prevent further spread and to reduce the risk of severe complications.
As the situation develops, authorities are continuing to monitor the outbreak and are urging the public to remain vigilant in the fight against this highly contagious disease.
