A court has fined the owner of Sumaiya Enterprise Tk5 lakh for supplying substandard and unsafe KitKat chocolates to Amania Bakery and Sweets in the capital’s Fakirapool area.

The verdict was delivered on Monday by Dhaka South City Corporation Pure Food Court Special Metropolitan Magistrate Nusrat Sahara Bithi at the city corporation’s Nagar Bhaban.

According to officials, Dhaka South City Corporation Safe Food Inspector Kamrul Hasan conducted a drive at Amania Bakery in Fakirapool under Motijheel on October 14, 2025.

During the operation, imported Nestlé KitKat chocolates were seized from the shop.

Laboratory tests later found the chocolates to be substandard and marketed without proper registration and approval.

The investigation identified Sumaiya Enterprise, located in the Maulvibazar area of Chawkbazar, as the main supplier of the chocolates.

A case was filed against the firm’s owner Md Mozammel Hossain for violating sections 26, 39 and 40 of the Safe Food Act 2013.

During the hearing on Monday, the accused appeared before the court and voluntarily admitted his guilt.

After the charges of supplying substandard, unregistered and unauthorised food products were proven, the court fined him Tk5 lakh.

The convicted individual paid the fine immediately after the verdict was announced.
