Adam Zampa’s incisive spell and Mitchell Marsh’s explosive half-century powered Australia to a commanding nine-wicket victory over Oman in their final Group B fixture of the T20 World Cup. Despite the emphatic result, Australia’s earlier defeats meant their elimination had already been confirmed.
After winning the toss and electing to field, Australia made an immediate breakthrough. Xavier Bartlett struck with the opening delivery, bowling Oman opener Amir Kaleem, before removing Jatinder Singh shortly afterwards to leave the batting side reeling.
The pressure intensified through the middle overs as leg-spinner Adam Zampa delivered a decisive performance, claiming 4 for 21. His control and variation prevented Oman from building partnerships, restricting them to 105 in their allotted overs. Wasim Ali top-scored with 32, but Oman struggled to gain momentum against disciplined bowling.
Zampa’s efforts earned him player-of-the-match honours and laid the foundation for a straightforward chase.
Australia’s reply was ruthless and efficient. Captain Mitchell Marsh anchored the innings with an unbeaten 64 from 33 balls, striking cleanly from the outset and ensuring there were no alarms in pursuit of 106.
Travis Head contributed a brisk 32 from 19 deliveries before falling with the target within sight, denying Australia a 10-wicket triumph. Josh Inglis added a quickfire unbeaten 12 from six balls as Australia reached 108 for 1 in just 9.4 overs.
The chase equalled the joint-fastest successful run pursuit in T20 World Cup history, matching England’s 9.4-over effort against the United States in 2024.
Although the victory was comprehensive, it could not erase the disappointment of earlier losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka that had ended Australia’s campaign prematurely.
“We missed our opportunities,” Marsh admitted after the match. “The dressing room is extremely disappointed. In the matches where we needed to be at our best, we weren’t.”
Zampa echoed the captain’s sentiments, describing the early exit as “truly disappointing” and acknowledging the sombre mood within the squad.
