Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has received a letter requesting him to administer the oath to the members of parliament elected in the 13th national parliamentary election.
Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhter Ahmed confirmed the matter on Monday.
He said, “A letter has been sent from the parliament secretariat to the chief election commissioner regarding administering the oath to the newly elected members of parliament.”
According to rules, the speaker administers the oath to MPs. However, after the fall of the Awami League following the July mass uprising and the dissolution of parliament, that option is not available this time.
Hence, initially, there was confusion arose over who would administer the oath to the MPs.
According to Article 148 of the constitution, if the person specified in the constitution or any other designated person fails to administer the oath to the elected members within three days of the official gazette of the general election results for any reason, the chief election commissioner will conduct the oath-taking within the next three days.
He will perform this duty as if he were the person designated for this purpose under the constitution.
