Secretary General of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam hinted that Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has agreed to hold national elections by mid-February following his meeting with BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday afternoon at the BNP Chairman’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, Mirza Fakhrul shared details of the discussions.
Earlier, after the meeting at the Dorchester Hotel in London, Mirza Fakhrul spoke on the phone with Tarique Rahman to discuss the outcomes.
Describing the meeting as a “turning point,” Fakhrul said the talks between the two leaders were cordial and symbolized a spirit of unity.
He added that Tarique Rahman paid tribute to those who have fought for democracy over the past 15 years and to the martyrs of the July movement.
Mirza Fakhrul also called for leaving behind recent conflicts and building a new Bangladesh together. He stated, “The fascist Sheikh Hasina has undermined democracy over the past 15 years, and it is time to break that and create a new Bangladesh.”
