Counterattacks and widespread vandalism broke out over voting in Kalaiya Port under Baufal upazila of Patuakhali on Friday.
The violence unfolded from morning to noon, eyewitnesses said.
Jubo Dal activists, including Sujan, Alamin and Langa Mizan, followers of Baufal Upazila Jubo Dal Convener Gazi Gias, allegedly attacked the business establishment of decorator businessman Md Shah Alam Biplob, 46, around 9:15am over allegations of voting irregularities.
They later beat timber trader Md Selim, 52.
After the attacks, the group reportedly took shelter at Gias’s house armed with locally made weapons.
In retaliation, Jamaat-backed activists and local businessmen allegedly attacked Gias’s business establishment and party office, causing extensive damage.
At least 10 motorcycles and a refrigerator kept in front of his residence were vandalised.
Around 8am, Jamaat supporters allegedly beat and injured BNP activists Alamgir Gazi, 55, and Shahabuddin Sarda, 48, in the Khairbazar area of West Birpasha under Kanakdia Union.
They were admitted to Baufal Upazila Health Complex.
Separately, BNP activists and supporters allegedly beat and injured Jamaat supporter Md Firoz, 55, in Mominpur village under Keshabpur Union around 1pm.
He was later sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Baufal Police Station Inspector Investigation Atiqul Islam said police were deployed after reports of attacks, vandalism and assaults at several locations.
“Legal action will be taken if a written complaint is filed,” he added.
Jamaat’s winning candidate Shafiqul Islam Masud said he did not support revenge politics and that injustice would not be tolerated.
“If any workers or supporters are involved in attacks, party and legal action will be taken against them,” he said.
