The United Nations has expressed concern over reports from women’s groups and civil society organisations regarding violence and harassment targeting women candidates and voters, including incidents of digital abuse, ahead of the 13th parliamentary election.

In a press release issued on the eve of the polls, the UN stressed that safe, inclusive and meaningful participation in public life is a fundamental right. This right extends to all women and girls, including women with disabilities, women from minority communities, gender-diverse individuals and others who may face heightened barriers, discrimination or gender-based violence.

The UN said that a growing pattern of abuse directed at women engaged in public life, including political leaders, activists, journalists and human rights defenders.

Many have reported increased incidents of cyberbullying, deepfakes, coordinated online harassment and image-based abuse, including AI-manipulated and sexually explicit content aimed at intimidation and character assassination, it said.

Reaffirming its longstanding position, the UN said it has consistently advocated for meaningful representation and leadership of women in politics. It is currently working with the Election Commission to strengthen women’s participation and representation in the electoral process.

The UN emphasised that all voters including women must be able to take part in the election as candidates and voters without intimidation, discrimination, online abuse or fear of retaliation. Ensuring a safe environment for women’s participation is essential for an inclusive and credible democratic process, the statement said.

Calling for collective responsibility, the UN urged all stakeholders including political leaders, parties and their supporters to adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward intimidation, harassment and all forms of violence against women throughout the electoral period. This, it said, applies equally to women candidates and voters, whose safety and participation are vital to strengthening democratic institutions.

The UN also expressed confidence that the authorities will continue taking necessary measures to uphold security and the rule of law, ensuring protection of the rights and safety of every individual during the election.

It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh in promoting a secure, inclusive and rights-based electoral environment.
