Brent T Christensen, the United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, visited the historic World War II Cemetery in Chattogram city. He was accompanied by Shahadat Hossain, mayor of Chattogram City Corporation.
During the visit on Tuesday morning, deep respect was paid to the memory of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in World War II. At the time, both sides exchanged views on the cemetery’s historical significance, preservation measures, aesthetic environment, and environmental issues.
Ambassador Christensen highlighted Chattogram’s development potential, saying there are opportunities for future cooperation in urban development, environmental conservation, healthcare, and civic services.
He said that the US is interested in sharing experience and technology in these sectors.
CCC Mayor Shahadat briefed the ambassador on the ongoing development activities of the port city, modern urban management initiatives, expansion of civic services, and future plans.
Emphasising that international cooperation is vital for sustainable and modern urban development, he said that world-class technology and expertise must be utilised to build Chattogram into a clean, livable, and smart city.
The mayor mentioned that positive results have already been achieved in mosquito control using American technology. Success has come through the use of modern larvicide BTI. He expressed hope for US experience and technological support in solving other civic problems in the city as well.
Referring to the past year, the mayor said that the city has implemented multifaceted development activities in a planned manner. Improvements in communication infrastructure have been achieved through road development and new road construction, building retaining and guide walls, and establishing small drainage systems.
