Arafat Rahman Koko, the younger son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, is being remembered on his 11th death anniversary on Saturday.
He passed away in Malaysia after suffering a cardiac arrest on 24 January 2015. Two days later, his body was brought back to Bangladesh and laid to rest at Dhaka’s Banani Graveyard.
BNP and his family have arranged prayers and gatherings to mark the anniversary of the younger brother of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
According to BNP’s media cell, various programmes have been organised for the day. On Saturday morning, Quran recitations were held at Banani Graveyard.
Senior leaders, including BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, visited the grave around 9:30am. and offered tributes.
A gathering was held at BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan around 11am, while another programme is scheduled for the afternoon at the chairman’s office in Gulshan.
During the 1/11 political changeover, on 3 September 2007, Koko was arrested along with then BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from their residence on Moinul Road inside Dhaka Cantonment.
He was released on bail on 17 July 2008 and travelled to Thailand for medical treatment. Later, he moved to Malaysia, where he lived until his death.
