Sydney Sweeney has officially signed on to reprise her role as Millie Calloway in ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’, the sequel to the hit psychological thriller ‘The Housemaid’. The follow-up has been greenlit after the film’s strong box office performance, according to industry reports.
The sequel is based on the second novel in Freida McFadden’s bestselling trilogy and has been in development for several months. Production is expected to begin later this year. Director Paul Feig will return to helm the project, while Michele Morrone is also set to reprise his role as Enzo, the Winchesters’ groundskeeper.
Released earlier this year, The Housemaid exceeded expectations at the box office, earning more than $133 million worldwide against a reported $35 million budget. The R-rated thriller gained momentum through strong audience response and online discussion, with its ending clearly setting up a continuation of Millie’s story.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said the decision to move forward was driven by audience demand. He noted that viewers worldwide had strongly connected with the story and were eager to see what happens next. Feig also welcomed the opportunity to continue the character’s journey, saying the success of the first film reflected the work of the cast and crew and the strength of McFadden’s source material.
Amanda Seyfried’s character Nina Winchester does not appear in the second book, though her involvement in the sequel has not been ruled out.
The actor recently hinted that a follow-up was inevitable while speaking at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
