Returning officers have rejected the nomination papers of both female candidates who filed nominations in Tangail for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.
Only two women submitted nomination papers across the district’s eight constituencies. After scrutiny, the district returning officer cancelled both nominations.
The disqualified candidates are Fatema Rahman Bithi, Ganosamhati Andolon nominee in Tangail-5 (Sadar), and Ainun Nahar, independent candidate in Tangail-3 (Ghatail).
District Senior Election Officer Tajul Islam said 86 aspirants collected nomination papers to contest the election in Tangail’s eight constituencies. Of them, 65 candidates submitted nominations. After scrutiny, officials cancelled 28 nominations for various reasons. The district now has 37 valid candidates.
Fatema Rahman Bithi said her nomination was cancelled because she mistakenly submitted photocopies instead of the original party nomination form and affidavit.
“My nomination has been temporarily rejected. I have filed an appeal with the Election Commission in Dhaka. I hope to recover my candidacy after submitting the required documents,” she said.
Independent candidate Ainun Nahar said officials rejected her nomination because the signatures of one percent of voters did not meet the requirements. She added that she would appeal the decision to regain her candidacy.
