Miscreants carried out a robbery at a shop in Chandrima Market in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area early Monday.
Confirming the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner (Mohammadpur Zone) Jewel Rana said that several masked men broke the lock, opened the shutter, and entered.
They took away 70 bhori of gold and 600 bhori of silver. A case has been filed regarding the incident, he added.
Masud Rana, owner of New Rana Jewellers, said, “I closed the shop around 11pm on Sunday and went home. When I came to open the shop around 10am on Monday, I found the locks of the grill gate and the shutter broken.”
He added, “Upon entering, I saw my shop had been ransacked. They (thieves) have taken gold, silver, and everything in my shop.”
“They also stole the purchase receipts of the valuable metals. Tk4 lakh in cash is also missing from my shop,” he said.
He claimed the approximate market value of the 70 bhori of gold is Tk1.54 crore and the 600 bhori of silver is Tk21.60 lakh.
CCTV footage shows members of a gang of thieves entering the premises around 3:21am, breaking the glass, and leaving with a locker. They waited inside for quite some time before departing with the locker containing the gold and silver in a pickup truck, the footage shows.
