122 leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) central committee have taken a position in favour of a possible political alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. They have individually informed the party’s convener, Nahid Islam, of their support in writing.
NCP’s Joint Chief Coordinator Md Arifur Rahman Tuhin confirmed the matter to TIMES of Bangladesh.
He said, “Those who agree with the decision have sent letters from their side. So far, a total of 122 leaders have sent letters expressing their consent.”
He further informed that, apart from the 30 leaders who sent a letter to party convener Nahid Islam yesterday, all remaining party members have expressed support for the decision.
After internal discussion, 16-17 of those 30 have clarified that they only raised some concerns; however, they are ultimately in favour of the party’s decision.
Party sources indicate that this initiative to strengthen support for the alliance began after a list of 30 leaders opposing the alliance became public. As part of this, leaders and activists from the central and grassroots levels began sending letters of support to convener Nahid Islam.
The letters state that timely political decisions are essential for implementing the party’s ideology and goals. With the upcoming parliamentary election ahead, effective political compromise is needed to strengthen democratic institutions and establish an accountable governance system.
The letters further mention, “Considering the party and national interests, and the broader goal of democratic transformation, if NCP decides on any electoral compromise or alliance formation with any political party or alliance, we offer our full support and approval.”
In the letters, the leaders state that they have faith in any alliance or electoral arrangement approved by the convener and the member secretary. Simultaneously, they express hope that the convener’s visionary leadership will keep the party united and strong and further increase public trust.
Among the signatories to the letters are Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adib, Sarowar Tushar, Ateeq Mujahid, Javed Rashin, Sultan Muhammad Zakaria, Ehtesham Haque, Joint Chief Coordinator Arifur Rahman Tuhin, Senior Joint Chief Organizer Saifullah Haider, Ataullah, Mahmuda Mitu, Ali Naser Khan, and 0Mahin Sarkar.
