A passenger bus was set on fire in Cumilla’s Burichang upazila on Thursday afternoon after a pedestrian was killed in a road accident on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway.
The accident occurred in the Kabila area, while the bus was torched later in Korpai after locals intercepted it.
The victim was identified as Sirajul Haque, 90, a resident of the Mohichail area in Chandina upazila.
Local sources said a bus operated by Ekota Paribahan struck Sirajul while he was crossing the highway, killing him on the spot. The bus attempted to flee the scene, but locals set up barricades and managed to stop it in the Korpai area. All passengers were safely taken off the bus before it was set ablaze.
Members of the army, police from Mainamati Highway Crossing Police Station and a Fire Service unit rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
Mainamati Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Mumin said the bus driver fled immediately after the accident. The burned vehicle was later recovered and taken to the police station.
