Paris Saint Germain sealed a rare calendar year sextuple with a dramatic Intercontinental Cup win in Doha. The French champions beat Flamengo on penalties to lift their sixth trophy of 2025. The final ended 1-1 after extra time. PSG won the shootout 2-1.
Luis Enrique’s team started the match well. They controlled the ball and pressed high. PSG took the lead in the first half. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in the 38th minute. He tapped in from close range after a low cross from Désiré Doué. Flamengo keeper Agustín Rossi misjudged the ball.
PSG thought they had scored earlier. Fabián Ruiz found the net in the ninth minute. VAR ruled it out as the ball had gone out of play before the move.
Flamengo improved after the break. They pushed forward and searched for an equaliser. In the 62nd minute, they were awarded a penalty. Marquinhos was judged to have fouled Giorgian De Arrascaeta in the box. The call looked soft, but VAR backed the referee. Jorginho scored to make it 1-1.
PSG stayed on top in normal time but could not find a winner. The match went into extra time. PSG looked stronger and fresher. Ousmane Dembélé came on and had two good chances, but he missed both. He also missed his penalty in the shootout, sending it over the bar.
The shootout decided the title. Vitinha scored the first penalty for PSG. Nuno Mendes added another. For Flamengo, only Nicolás De la Cruz scored. Saúl Ñíguez, Pedro, Léo Pereira and Luiz Araújo all failed. PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov saved four penalties and won the match for his team.
The Intercontinental Cup completed PSG’s sextuple in 2025. They had already won Ligue 1, the French Cup and the Champions League. They also lifted the French Super Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. Only Barcelona had achieved a calendar year sextuple before, in 2009.
PSG could have added a seventh trophy. They lost the Club World Cup final 3-0 to Chelsea in the United States. Even so, Luis Enrique’s side closed the year with a historic achievement.
