One month after a BNP-nominated candidate in Chattogram-8 was shot, unknown assailants targeted Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha and a potential independent candidate for Dhaka-8.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday criticised the interim government for its apparent failure to prevent such attacks.
Speaking at a meeting titled “Plan to build the nation” at the Krishibid Institute in Farmgate, Dhaka, Rizvi said, “Last Friday, a tragic and shocking incident occurred. Hadi was shot. Muhammad Yunus’ interim government is supposed to be neutral. How could such criminal activities increase under their watch? Everyone should be able to live peacefully.”
He questioned why authorities were not more vigilant after the Chattogram incident and raised concerns about potential attempts to disrupt the 12 February national elections.
“Those who supported the interim government through difficult times are now witnessing its failure. Is someone trying to undermine the upcoming election? These are serious questions,” Rizvi said.
Rizvi also accused a political party of spreading misinformation against the BNP following the attack on Hadi. “Several incidents suggest that a master plan may be at play,” he added.
BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasised the party’s commitment to building a tolerant Bangladesh.
“After 5 August, the people expect change. We are promoting politics of tolerance, but we see opposing forces pursuing mobocracy, belittling others, and destabilising the situation. The people do not want this,” he said.
Amir Khosru stressed that democracy works only when its economic benefits reach all citizens. “Otherwise, democracy remains confined to speeches and elections,” he added.
