Brazil won the first ever Women’s Futsal World Cup on Sunday, defeating Portugal 3–0 in the final at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, Manila, to cap a 16 day tournament played in front of packed crowds and growing global interest.
A sell out of around five thousand watched Brazil take control midway through the first half when Emely opened the scoring. The reigning FIFA Women’s Futsal Best Player added both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot to her collection after finishing with seven goals and two assists.
Amandinha doubled the lead early in the second half, before Debora Vanin struck Brazil’s third with three minutes left. Brazil completed the tournament unbeaten, while Portugal, who had knocked out Argentina in the semi final, finished runners up.
Spain claimed third place with a 5–1 win over Argentina, with Laura Cordoba scoring twice.
Portugal’s Ana Catarina was named best goalkeeper, and Brazil received the Fair Play Award.
Brazil head coach Wilson Saboia said the victory should be seen as a catalyst rather than a conclusion. “I am really happy,” he said. “The players were fantastic, the coaching staff were excellent too. This win leaves a big mark, because it will make futsal even more popular in schools, clubs and universities at home, and that will help produce better coaches and players.”
