BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has warned that the coming days “will not be easy” and that “very difficult times lie ahead,” calling on everyone to remain alert.
He made the remarks at the closing session of a daylong discussion held on Sunday at the Krishibid Institution auditorium in Farmgate.
The programme, titled “Plans to build the Nation,” was organised by the BNP and attended by leaders and activists of the student wing Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD). The event was inaugurated in the morning by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Tarique said conspiracies are afoot in different spheres, and only BNP, together with the people, would be able to resist them. He said the only way to counter these conspiracies was “democracy, democracy and democracy.
“To uphold people’s will, democracy must be established. However, that despite BNP’s ability to resist conspiracies, difficult times lay ahead.”
Tarique said that since 5 August, he had repeatedly warned that “very tough times are coming.”
The BNP leader added, “Under any circumstances, corruption must be curbed. Law and order situation must be brought under control. Immediately upon forming the next government, these two issues must receive priority attention.
“Unless these pressing issues are addressed, BNP’s planned reforms in healthcare, education for future generations, women’s empowerment and agricultural development would face obstacles.”
Tarique said only the BNP can curb corruption and improve the law and order situation, adding that the party had done so in the past and would be able to do so again if given the opportunity.
He also outlined BNP’s plans on unemployment, education, healthcare, economic development, women’s empowerment and improvement of the agricultural sector.
Commenting that “some parties are singing in the tune of fascists,” Tarique said certain individuals and groups had begun echoing the same false propaganda once used by a “fugitive autocrat” against the BNP.
The BNP leader said two individuals who served in government at that time are now deceased and that no unkind words should be spoken about those no longer alive.
Tarique said their decision to remain with the BNP government until the final day proved two things: they had full confidence in Khaleda Zia, and they believed she was committed to fighting corruption.
