Ruhul Amin Babul, the veteran producer-director and husband of actress Nuton, has died at the age of 75 following a prolonged battle with cancer. He passed away on December 6 (Saturday) at around 5:00 pm, leaving behind a body of work that helped shape a formative era of Bangladeshi commercial cinema.
News of his passing was confirmed by Jacky Alamgir, office and publicity secretary of the Bangladesh Film Artists’ Association. Funeral prayers will be held on Sunday, after Zohar, at the Central Mosque in Bashundhara Residential Area’s D-Block, followed by burial at Azimpur Cemetery.
Although Babul’s final years were marked by recurring illness, family members say he continued to fight with determination. After showing signs of recovery and spending some time at home, he was re-admitted to hospital when his health deteriorated once again.
Babul came to prominence in the late 1970s, emerging as one of the founding members of the Jambs Fighting Group, a collective that contributed significantly to the action-driven films of the time. Over the course of his career, he produced around 30 films, many of them major box-office successes. Titles such as ‘Dost Dushmon’, ‘Barud,’ ‘Chaad Shurjo’ and ‘Kabin’ became staples of the era, remembered for their crowd-pleasing energy and enduring popularity. His final production,’ Ami Shei Meye’, was released in 1998.
Beyond his professional life, Babul shared a long partnership with actress Nuton, born Farhana Amin Ratna, whom he married in 1978. The couple raised two daughters, Labiba Amin and Farhana Amin Ritu.
