Dhaka Capitals have appointed former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar as their mentor for the next Bangladesh Premier League(BPL) season, confirming the move in a statement that outlines who is joining, what his role will be, when and where he will work, and why the franchise believes he fits their plans.
Akhtar, who has not visited Bangladesh for more than a decade, expressed his excitement in a video message, describing Bangladesh as one of his favourite places and saying it remained close to his heart. He added that he is looking forward to working in the BPL and meeting supporters, offering his affection to fans who have followed him throughout his career.
The former pacer, long retired from international cricket, has never previously worked as a coach or mentor in the first eleven editions of the BPL. His arrival for the twelfth edition marks his first formal role in a major franchise league. When confirming the appointment, Dhaka Capitals said that their vision aligned with Akhtar’s approach to pace, calling for the roar to begin as they introduced him as their advisor.
Since leaving the game, Akhtar has established himself as a prominent media figure, regularly appearing in analytical programmes and producing cricket content on his YouTube channel. His commentary extends beyond Pakistan cricket, reaching audiences in multiple countries.
Dhaka Capitals made their BPL debut in the eleventh edition and endured a difficult first campaign. According to several Bangladesh Cricket Board sources, Shakib Al Hasan is set to remain involved in the ownership structure for the next five years under the existing agreement. On the field, the team finished sixth out of seven sides, managing only three wins from twelve matches.
Seeking to respond to that performance, Dhaka have moved early to strengthen the squad. They have already signed several high profile players, including Alex Hales, Usman Khan, Taskin Ahmed and Saif Hassan, as they aim to build a more competitive side for the upcoming season.
