State Defence counsel Amir Hossain expects that deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal will be acquitted. He stated, “I also believe the judgement will be fair.”
Hossain was speaking to journalists before entering the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday.
Meanwhile, security has been bolstered extensively in the capital centring the verdict for deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two other accused in the crimes against humanity case related to the July mass uprising.
Following the fall of the Awami League regime on 5 August 2024, the International Crimes Tribunal was reconstituted. The first case in the reconstituted tribunal was filed against Sheikh Hasina concerning crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
The first judicial proceedings of the reconstituted tribunal were held on 17 October last year. On that same day, the tribunal issued an arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina in this case.
Initially, Sheikh Hasina was the sole accused in this case. On 16 March this year, the Prosecution applied to make former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun a co-accused alongside Sheikh Hasina, which the tribunal granted.
The Prosecution brought five charges in the crimes against humanity case related to the mass uprising of 2024. The tribunal’s investigation agency submitted its report on 12 May. The formal charge document spans 8,747 pages in total.
This includes 2,018 pages of sources, 4,005 pages of seizure lists and documentary evidence, and 2,724 pages detailing the list of martyrs.
