Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain have launched a sit-in protest in front of Nagar Bhaban, demanding his swearing-in as Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
Protesters arrived in processions from various parts of the capital at 10.00am Tuesday and set up a stage at the main entrance of the city corporation building.
The demonstration has blocked the road from Bangabazar to Gulistan’s Golap Shah Mazar, causing severe traffic congestion in the area.
From the stage, the national anthem and patriotic songs are being played. Protesters are chanting slogans not only in support of Ishraque’s appointment but also demanding the resignation of Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan.
In a Facebook post published on Monday afternoon, Asif said, “By locking the gates of Nagar Bhaban and protesting, the BNP is deliberately misinterpreting the court verdict and causing unnecessary public suffering.”
The statement comes amid continued demonstrations by supporters of Ishraque, who have been staging sit-ins and protests at Nagar Bhaban over the past several days. Protesters have blocked the main entrance to the DSCC building, demanding that Ishraque be sworn in as mayor immediately, following a recent court verdict in his favour.
