Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed the club remain interested in signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.
The Argentina forward’s future has been in doubt in recent weeks. Atletico fans have also turned against him after he made it clear that he wants to leave the club.
Laporta said Barcelona’s interest remains active as the transfer window moves towards its end.
“This whole situation has created a lot of noise. This is not motivated by actions taken by Barca. It is motivated by the fact that Atletico told us they were not selling Alvarez. However, it looks like, from what we hear now, they are trying to reach agreements with other clubs,” Laporta said.
The Barcelona president said his club would be ready to act if Atletico changed their position.
“With this context, our interest and offer for the player remains up until the end of the window, in case Atletico want to sell the player. We are very interested in buying Julian Alvarez. We would like our offer to be accepted. We say it with all the respect towards Atletico,” he added.
Atletico, however, have made it clear that they do not want to sell Alvarez to their LaLiga rivals.
Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has said the club would reject even an offer of 200 million euros for a player they want to keep.
The club has also taken a strong position over a possible move to Barcelona.
“There’s a 0% chance of selling him to Barca. This situation isn’t about money, it’s about dignity,” Atletico told Spanish newspaper MARCA.
Alvarez has already spoken openly about his desire for a new challenge.
During the 2026 World Cup, the 26 year old said he had spoken with Atletico about a possible transfer to “fulfil my dream”.
His comments have not gone down well with some Atletico supporters.
Alvarez received a hostile reception during Atletico’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday.
Fans booed him while he warmed up. They again jeered him when he came on as a substitute.
Despite the growing tension, Alvarez remains one of Atletico’s most important players.
He joined the Spanish club from Manchester City in 2024 on a six year contract.
The Argentina international has since scored 49 goals and provided 17 assists in 107 appearances.
Barcelona are now keeping their interest alive. But any move will depend on Atletico changing a position that, for now, remains firm.
