Saint Martin’s Island, Bangladesh’s only coral paradise in the Bay of Bengal, continues to enchant travellers with its turquoise waters and serene charm. Each winter, this small island transforms into a sought-after getaway for nature enthusiasts, both local and international.
Although recent regulations have tightened access to protect the island’s fragile ecosystem, visitors are still making their way to this scenic destination. Authorities have, however, imposed strict travel schedules, limited transport options, and a mandatory permit system to ensure safe and sustainable tourism.
When can tourists visit?
According to the district administration and marine authorities, tourist ships are permitted to operate from 1 November, 2025 to January 2026, depending on weather and sea conditions.
During November, visitors can enjoy day trips only, with no overnight stays allowed due to safety concerns. From December through January, limited night halts are authorised under close supervision, enabling travellers to experience the island’s calm nights and sunrise views.
Exclusive departure from Cox’s Bazar
For the 2025–26 season, the Nuniya Chhara BIWTA Jetty in Cox’s Bazar has been designated as the only departure point for trips to Saint Martin’s Island. The earlier Teknaf and Inani routes remain suspended for safety and administrative reasons.
Only government-approved passenger vessels are allowed to operate this route. Speedboats, trawlers, and private boats remain banned to prevent accidents and unauthorised entry. Ships typically leave the jetty from 7:00am to 10:00am, depending on tide schedules, and return from the island from 3:00pm and 6:00 pm. The journey usually takes around five to five and a half hours each way.
Tickets and travel pass rules
Similar to the previous year, a travel pass remains compulsory for all passengers. The pass is automatically issued when travellers purchase tickets from the Bangladesh Tourism Board’s authorised online portal or via the official website travelpass.gov.bd.
Each pass is digitally linked to the traveller’s booking through a unique QR code, which must be presented during boarding. Tickets without valid QR codes will be considered void. Passengers are advised to keep a printed copy of their tickets for smooth verification.
To complete the booking, visitors must provide their national ID information and basic travel details. Children aged five years and below are exempt from ticket requirements, while older children and adults must have individual tickets.
Depending on accommodation class—deck, lounge, or cabin—round-trip fares range from Tk 3,500 to Tk 20,000.

While the new system may seem restrictive, authorities say the measures are essential to preserve the coral ecosystem and manage tourism responsibly. The island remains open through January 2026, with strict adherence to official guidelines.
