Police arrested 11 more people in connection with the vandalism, looting, and arson attacks at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star in the capital.
The information was disclosed in a message sent by the Media and Public Relations Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Tuesday.
The arrests were made through operations conducted across the city.
The arrested individuals are Abdur Rahman, 30; Md Jannatul Naeem, 21; Md Faisal, 24; Qari Muaz bin Abdur Rahman, 33; Zubayer Hossain, 21; Md Almas Ali, 29; Zulfiqar Ali Sourav, 22; Niyaz Mahmud, 28; Mohammad Mainul Islam, 22; Md Hasem, 26; and Arafat Yasin, 29.
With the latest arrests, the total number of arrestees in connection with these attacks has reached 28. Legal action against the arrestees is currently underway, DMP said.
On Monday, DMP said in a press briefing that 17 individuals had been arrested. By analysing footage, continuous operations were conducted to identify and arrest those involved.
According to the DMP, between approximately 11:15pm on 18 December and 2:30am on 19 December, hundreds of unidentified people illegally gathered and carried out the attacks at the Prothom Alo and The Daily Star offices. When police reached the scene, the attackers reportedly behaved aggressively towards the law enforcers.
The situation was later brought under control with the deployment of additional police and members of the army. Fire Service personnel extinguished the blaze and rescued those trapped inside the building.
Following the incident, DMP launched the operations to identify and arrest those involved in what it described as a heinous attack on the media. Tejgaon Police Station initiated special drives at different locations across the capital to apprehend the suspects.
Among the newly arrested individuals, police recovered Tk50,000 in looted cash from one suspect named Naim. A television and a refrigerator purchased with the looted money were also seized.
The DMP said cases have been filed with Tejgaon Police Station under the Penal Code, the Special Powers Act, the Cyber Security Ordinance and the Anti-Terrorism Act. Legal proceedings against the arrestees are currently underway.
