Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has described November 7 as a historic event in the struggle to protect Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty and restore democracy.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day at the Lalmonirhat District Council Auditorium on Saturday morning.
Dulu said the BNP had consistently played a role in restoring democracy and establishing a multi-party political system. He expressed optimism that democracy and development would continue to advance under the leadership of the prime minister.
He said martyred President Ziaur Rahman had established multi-party democracy, while Khaleda Zia later played a role in restoring it. Democracy had subsequently been re-established under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, he added.
“BNP means democracy. BNP means the country’s independence and sovereignty,” the minister said.
Dulu also announced that the prime minister would visit Lalmonirhat on 19 November. During the visit, he would inaugurate a canal excavation programme and exchange views with 15,000 volunteers from the district.
The meeting was chaired by Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Md Rashedul Haque Pradhan. District Council Administrator AKM Mominul Haque and Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman, among others, also spoke.
Later, the minister inaugurated a rally marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day. Leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated and associate organisations took part in the rally.
