The 57th Director General level border coordination conference between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) was successfully conducted at the BSF Headquarters in New Delhi from 8 to 11 June.
The Indian delegation was led by Shri Praveen Kumar, IPS, director general of the BSF, while the Bangladesh delegation was headed by Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, director general of the BGB.
Described as the highest-level bilateral mechanism between the two forces, the conference was held in a cordial, positive, and forward-looking atmosphere, read a BSF press release.
The platform allowed both sides to review the prevailing border situation and discuss issues of mutual concern regarding border security and management.
During the deliberations, the two delegations held detailed discussions on measures to effectively prevent trans-border crimes, including the smuggling of narcotics, arms, counterfeit currency, gold, and other contraband.
The talks also covered illegal border crossings, human trafficking, and issues relating to border deaths and illegal, inadvertent, or forcible crossings.
Further discussions focused on the construction of border infrastructure, the implementation of the Coordinated Border Management Plan, and confidence-building measures. Both sides emphasized the need for closer cooperation in addressing emerging security challenges along the international boundary.
The forces reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, tranquillity, and stability along the India-Bangladesh border. To achieve this, they agreed to strengthen coordinated patrols, enhance vigil, improve real-time information sharing, and intensify joint efforts against trans-border criminal networks.
A significant emphasis was placed on sensitising the border population about the sanctity of the international boundary and promoting public awareness to prevent illegal activities.
The BSF and BGB reiterated their shared resolve to adopt a policy of zero tolerance towards trans-border crimes, insurgent activities, and any actions that undermine border security. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the conference’s outcome, reaffiring their commitment to strengthening mutual trust and professional engagement.
The conference concluded on 11 June 2026 with the signing of a Joint Record of Discussions.
Both delegations expressed confidence that the decisions reached would further enhance bilateral cooperation and contribute significantly to effective border management and friendly relations between the two nations.
The next director general-level conference is proposed to be held in Dhaka in November 2026.
